What's MERV 13 ?

MERV stands for Minimum Efficiency Rating Value. Designed by the ASHRAE (American Society of Heating, Refrigerating, and Air Conditioning Engineers), MERV is the standard to measure the efficiency of different air filters designed by different manufacturers. Basically, MERV represents the ability of an air filter to remove harmful air pollutants and keep the air clean.

Air filters are categorized according to the MERV ranking starting for numeric value 1 to 16. That means air filters with higher MERV ranking are more efficient to keep the air clean. Among 1 to 16 MERV ranking filter, 7 to 13 are considered as the most effective for the residential uses. Filters within MERV 7 to 13 ranking are capable of removing most of the air contaminants. Air filters with higher than 13 MERV ranking are reserved for commercial applications like a hospital where a higher standard of sanitary and air cleanliness are required.
